Dialup Connection Setup in Windows XP

These instructions will help you add and remove dialup connections to WorldSpice in Windows XP. The appearance of the Start Menu and Control Panel in Windows XP can vary wildly depending on what settings have been changed, so the following screenshots may not always be identical to what you see. These images are taken from a plain, standard Windows XP installation.

Finding & Deleting Old Dialup Connections

On the WinXP-style Start Menu, either (A) select Control Panel, or (B) select Connect To and then Show all connections. If you selected Control Panel, click here. If you selected Show all connections, click here.

On the classic Start Menu, select Control Panel. Click here to continue.

XP-style Control Panel

On the WinXP-style Control Panel, select Network and Internet Connections, then Network Connections as shown in the following two screenshots. Click here to continue.

Network Connections

Notice that all dialup connections are under the heading Dial-up. It may be useful to delete old and unused dialup connections that were previously set up. Right click any connections that need to be deleted and select Delete from the menu.

Adding A New Dialup Connection

Starting the Network Connection Wizard

In the Network Connections window, select Create a new connection under Network Tasks in the sidebar. If the sidebar is not visible, look under the File menu for New Connection....

Alternately, the Network Connection Wizard can also be started by going to the Start Menu, then to Programs, then to Accessories, then to Communications, then to New Connection Wizard.

The wizard opens with this message:

If you have never before set up a network connection on your computer (dialup or otherwise), you will also immediately see the following window. If you do not see this window, skip this part. Enter your area code in the What are code (or city code) are you in now? box, then click OK.

If you saw the previous window, then you will see the following window after clicking Ok. Just click OK again.

Network Connection Wizard Continued

On the Welcome to the New Connection Wizard page, click Next. The page below is displayed. Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.

Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.

Select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.

Type in the ISP Name, WorldSpice, and click Next.

Type in the Phone number, 333-6000. If you have call waiting and would like to disable it when you dial in, use *70,333-6000. Click Next.

Type in the User name, Password (twice), and make sure the checkboxes are checked as indicated in the screenshots below. (The Internet Connection Firewall is actually on by default, and you may opt to leave it that way.) Click Next.

The New Connection Wizard finishes with the following page. Check the Add a shortcut... checkbox and click Finish.

A shortcut will be created on you desktop. You can double-click this to quickly get connected.

When you try to connect, you will be presented with this window. Click the Dial button.
